The Pyramid

Duration15-30 minutes
PlayersFrom 3 to 10
DifficultyEasy

A game where you’ve got to have a nose for it... and choose carefully who you’re going after.

Material required

  • Deck of cards (32 or 52 cards)

Goal of the game

In each round, guess one of the attributes of the proposed card and choose your targets carefully.

Setup

  • 01. Sit down around a table.
  • 02. Decide on a game master who will draw the cards, bearing in mind that the game master can also play.

Gameplay

  • 01. On each turn, the game master goes around each player clockwise one by one, taking the top card from the packet without showing or looking at it, and asks them to guess an attribute of the card following the turn (details of the attribute to be guessed in the following steps).
  • 02. First turn, the game master asks you to guess the color of the card: red or black.
  • 03. Second turn: more or less than your first card, bearing in mind that the order of the cards is as follows: (2, 3, 4, 5, 6), 7, 8, 9, 10, jack, queen, king, ace.
  • 04. Third turn: inside, outside or equal to one of the previous two cards.
  • 05. Fourth turn: the card sign, spades, hearts, diamonds or clubs.
  • 06. When the player has made and validated their choice, the master of the game turns over the card. If the player has guessed correctly, he distributes a number of sips equal to the number of the current turn to the player of his choice, otherwise he drinks them. For example, if the player guesses wrong about the colour of the card (turn one), he takes one sip. If, on the other hand, he gets the colour of the card right on turn four, he takes four sips.
  • 07. Once the four rounds have been completed, the master of the game arranges ten of the remaining cards face down in a pyramid in four rows: a base of four cards, then three, two and finally one.
  • 08. The master of the game turns over the pyramid cards one by one, starting with the base. Each player then deals a number of sips equal to the number of the line of the pyramid for each card equal to the drawn card. For example: first line, a queen is drawn. Each player takes a sip for each queen in his or her deck. Or, if a seven is drawn at the point of the pyramid, each player with a seven takes four sips for each seven in his or her deck.

Variant

  • The “Liar” mode: when the pyramid is opened, each player can turn over his or her cards. Each time a card is revealed, a player who doesn’t have the card can take a sip. In this case, the target has two options: drink, or say “Liar”. If he says “Liar”, then the player who gave the sips has one go at showing the card in question. If he shows it, the designated player doubles his sips, otherwise the player who gave the sips drinks them.

Tips

  • If you have more than ten cards left for the pyramid, increase the number of rows (and therefore the number of sips).
  • If you want to spice up the game, make an inverted pyramid and draw the cards the other way round: the top card first for a single sip, until you reach the base and its four cards with four sips each!
